My Birthday Party!

Monday, July 21st, 2008

My Birthday Party!, originally uploaded by punquin.

Yey! The party was fun! There was a good turn-out. I was happily surprised to see a lot of my coworkers, in addition to Dawn & Tony making it after just arriving home from the beach.

The only thing that went wrong was that our Xbox officially took it’s last breath and went into permanent RRoD. So, no Rock Band. Dan got a 2 year warranty from Best Buy when he got the Xbox (the receipt says 8/26/06). It looks like you have to go online and request a cardboard coffin for it. I’m not sure what that means for our content on the HD. They warranty says it doesn’t cover lost data. Hrm. Danny apparently does not care to play Rock Band anymore, so I don’t think he really is motivated to get it fixed. I love singing on the game and just bought a year of Xbox Live which is now useless. :/

Back to the party! So, there wasn’t any Rock Band, which left the boys to mostly hang out and watch Danny’s Lamb of God dvd. Us girls dominated the craft table. I had set up 8 paint-your-own bobble-head dogs and 6 color-your-own fuzzy velvet jewelry boxes. We ran out of everything!

The photo booth was a hit, and it didn’t fall down, so I was happy. I hung paper clips on the outside of the booth so everyone could display their pictures in a “gallery”. We ended up filling all of the paper clips before the last guest left.

A lot of the girls were wearing dresses so they couldn’t play Twister, but we did have one good round (that I won!) I had to excuse myself from the party for a little while around midnight when I got a bad stomach ache. But, it got a lot better so that I was able to go downstairs to clean up and say goodbye to the last of the guests.

I was so, so happy that Mel was able to fly out for the party! She was a huge help setting up and decorating the rainbow cupcakes. She was with us until Sunday night. I miss her already! I wish Johnathan had been able to come too.

Happy Birthday to Me!

Warm, originally uploaded by punquin.

Yey, birthday! Boo, Monday. Working a half day, so I’m about to wrap things up. Benny and I went to Starbucks to enjoy a working breakfast outside. We scored a table with a shady umbrella, but it’s still super bright out here. This week I need to do prep for my birthday party on Saturday. I need to get a folding table, food/ baking supplies. and build my “photo booth”.

Back in the Groove

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

Hello! I’ve been so busy since getting home that a week has zoomed by. Where did I leave off..?

So, last Thursday, we flew from Cabo back to Los Angeles. Mel and Johnathan picked us up. They were awesome, as always. I was super excited to have real food choices again. We stopped on the way from the airport and I got a gardenburger and fries, then the Starbucks soy chai I have been craving all week. I’m trying to remember what we did after that… I know that Mel and I went to bed before the boys. I was tired.

On Friday, I was up at the crack of dawn, as usual. I never change from EST. J had to work, but we were able to meet him for breakfast. It was a chilly morning, but at least were weren’t stuck in the 100° weather they were having back home. After breakfast, we went to Venice Beach with Mel. It is tradition for us to go and get new necklaces from Tony, who has a table out there. I got a little jade Buddha that he restrung on the beaded string I picked out. Mel and I both got stone necklaces that you wear for 30 days straight when you first put it on. It is supposed to change color (darkness?) if your energy is good. I had to hold off on putting mine on until after the wedding we were going to. Danny got a new Om necklace since his last one fell off. He had him put it on a more secure necklace.

In the afternoon, it was time for Danny and I to drive to the valley and check in to the hotel where my brother-in-law’s wedding was being held. The temperature was about 20 degrees higher there. The hotel was pretty, though we had little double beds. (I had to sleep in my own bed the second night because we sleep all elbows and knees.) After cleaning up, we went to the wedding rehearsal and dinner. It was great to see everyone. My little baby cousins-in-law are getting so big! Dan received an acoustic guitar as his groomsman gift!

Saturday was wedding day. We kidnapped the groom (Dan’s brother) so he wouldn’t have to worry about running into the bride. We had breakfast and took him for a haircut. When we got back to the hotel in the afternoon, Danny went off with the groomsmen to get ready in the groom’s room. I relaxed in our room then showered and dressed for the wedding. When I headeddown to the lobby, everyone was already gathering outside. The ceremony was beautiful, but it was difficult for anyone see see because of how they positioned the bridal party like a wall in front of the bride and groom. There was a cocktail hour afterwards with a great a capella group. The reception was indoors with a DJ. Danny did so well with his best man toast – he made the ladies tear up at the end with his sweet mention of me. Everything was lovely and they really tried to make the guests feel welcome. There were baskets of slippers by the dance floor so you didn’t have to dance in heels. I danced a few songs with the cousins when Danny was out smoking a cigar from the cigar bar. There was a lounge set up later in the night that had snack foods like pizza and hot dogs. There was this great photo booth with hats and boas. You’d take you pictures then make a scrapbook page for the bride and groom with all the stickers and markers they supplied. There was also a huge table of mini photo frames for your extra photos. It was a really pretty wedding.

Sunday morning we visited with the family some more before driving back to J & M’s place (we had stolen their car for the weekend.) They took me to Hollywood to their favorite piercer. I really wanted to get a forward helix piercing, and I figured I’d get it done out west since they already had a piercer they were happy with. It was so hot that combined with my travel anxiety and we feeling a little yucky when we first got there. A quick trip to a 7-11 for a water bottle and I was good to go. The piercer was great. I think I maybe over-tipped, but I am terrible at figuring out tips on services. I appreciate when I get good tips at work, though, so I gave her $10 on the $45 piercing. I had to pay first, so I told her to take good care of me. It was quick and painless (though I have no problems with needles at all) and I love how it looks.

We flew home that night on the red-eye. We upgraded to first class when we got the the airport since they had 2 left and it was a good price. Thank goodness we did! Turns out nearly our whole flight was a class of 8th graders flying to Washington, D.C. Yikes. I didn’t sleep, but the chair was comfy and I made good use of all the free upgrades by eating dinner, watching a ton of pay tv shows and a movie. There is a chat feature on Virgin America and at one point, seat 19A wanted to chat. Haha, probably an 8th grader tying the wrong row number.

I’ve been busy getting back into my work routine this past week. On Wednesday we had a baby shower for a coworker. I stayed up the night before sewing her a baby blanket and embellished onesie. Laura stayed over backing super cute mini brownies. That night we went to the Iron Maiden concert. It was kick ass!

I have more to say, but I’ll do it in a separate post. Here are some photos:

Leaving Tomorrow!

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

I have no time to write, so I will make a list!

  • Tomorrow afternoon, we fly to California. We are crashing with J and Mel fr the night (thanks guys!) before flying to Cabo(!!) the next morning. We will be in Cabo (and most likely offline) until Thursday afternoon, when we return to Cali. After that, we’ll be heading to the hotel where Dan’s brother is getting married over that weekend.

  • I’ve been so busy with last minute things for work this week (I am the only graphic/web designer supporting corporate and 35 franchisees) that I’ve been told to work from home. I get more done here because there’s no commute and no distractions.
  • I’ve been on a re-braiding blitz for the past few days. I have 106 total, and as of this moment, I have 22 left to redo. Initially, I was leaving 8″ – 10″ loose at the ends because the extension hair I’m using is a lot like human hair. But, I’m not used to tangles and frizz and flyaways… Ugh! Danny and I agreed that I’d never be able to keep it nice through all our activities in Cabo, so I was up till 3:30 am last night adding a few inches of plaiting to each braid. Annoying, because I’m using weave thread to tie them off, so I have to use a seam ripper to un-tie them. I worked from in bed, and I made it though 40 of the 80 I had done so far. Over the course of today, I’ve managed to do the other 40 while at my desk working. Still have 22 full braids to redo, though.
  • I have no idea what to pack! And, I don’t want to leave the puppies. :( But, I need a vacation, that’s for sure.
  • I will try to update twitter and flickr as much as I can, but I don’t expect to have internet in Cabo. So, my updates may all come during my CA time. I’m not bringing a laptop – just my iPod which has email and a browser. Any photos I take that aren’t on my phone will have to wait until we return.

Is it June yet?

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

This entry will contain a lot of girly, vanity kind of stuff… So, pass on through if you find that stuff dull!

My most exciting news is that we are going on vacation next month. I can’t wait!! We already had to be in California mid-June for Danny’s brother’s wedding, so we decided to go to Cabo for a few days prior. I’m really excited – I’ve only been to Cancun (and a day trip to Cozumel) so far. We opted to book an all-inclusive resort for our stay, as we did in Cancun. It is hard to feed me in a foreign country, so having miles of free buffets works well. There is always salad, veggies, etc… Google Maps doesn’t have it shown yet,as it is very new. But, there is a photo and video here in the blank spot where the hotel is now. The hotel next door is by the same company (I wonder if we can use their facilities too…) and has some photos posted of the amazing views.

I’ve bought a couple inexpensive bikinis from Kohls and Target and I am currently trying out a new “gradual tan” daily lotion that actually doesn’t smell like dirty shoes. I’m having problems, however, finding cute skirts to wear. I have pretty wrap skirts, but I’d love to find some simple cotton or linen skirts. I can only find short, 80′s throw-backs or ones that are way too large. A question: what are some good clothes and shoes to pack if we plan to visit a few night clubs? The dirty hippie in me is clueless about these things.

I have my dress for the wedding, and it is currently at the tailor’s being taken in on top. I love it! I was worried that it has too much white to be worn as a wedding guest, but I’ve yet to have anyone think it was inappropriate. The groom though it was fine, though I never heard back from the bride. I already had silver kitten heels and I have a silver wrap. However, I don’t have a clutch that will work. It’s an evening wedding, and I assume silver would work best. My only silver bag is way too beaded and busy to work and can’t fit both a p&s camera and my phone. I don’t want to spend more than $20 and it needs to stand the test of time for a few years (as this dress will). Any suggestions. If I have to order something, it needs to be asap!

One other thing I’m nearly as excited about is my hair! I’ve had really awful extensions lately. The brand of hair I’ve used for years on my open-ended braids no longer makes my blond, and the brands I’ve tried over the past year have been dreadful (literally!) My ends are a disgusting, ratty mess and it all tangles together. So, after much research, I finally ordered some really nice mono-fiber extension hair from Europe. It is still synthetic, but it is supposed to be extremely high quality. I will be able to leave long sections of it loose (I hope!) and even style it on low heat (though I have no rollers). I bought my first hair brush in 8 years in preparation! The hair arrived fast from their Canadian distributor and I am dying to put it in! But, I need to wait till the end of the month so my roots are nice for vacation and the wedding. Must… not.. shave… head… Argh! I am thinking about re-sectioning the front of my hair to add a diagonal side part. That would give me the option of sweeping the front across my forehead fivehead and pulling it back. Here is a picture of me experimenting. Keep in mind, I am probably going to leave double the amount of hair loose at the bottom of each braid, so long as it works out. What do you think?

Since I have questions for you all sprinkled throughout this entry, I shall post them again in an easy, list format. :)

  1. Where can I find cute, simple skirts that are around knee-length and in size xs/s or 0-2? Cotton or linen preferred.
  2. What should I pack to wear to night clubs? Shoe help needed too! Photo examples?
  3. Where can I find an inexpensive evening clutch large enough to fit my phone and a p&s camera that matches my dress? Silver is an option and probably even preferred.
  4. Should I bother adding a side-part option to my hair?

Well, aren’t I needy today? I need to get back to work. This entry has been in progress off-and-on all day!

Glasses!

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

Last week, when I went with Danny for his eye-dilation, I brought my glasses prescription along so I could order new glasses. In order to use our vision insurance, I had to get them through an eye doctor. It was definitely a different experience than going to Lens Crafters!

There was a glasses technician who had me sit down at a table with a mirror and she started bringing me pair after pair while we discussed what I wanted. That was hard for me to explain to her… I wanted something more sophisticated that could be dressed up more, but at the same time I wanted it to be a little funky. I tried on dozens of pairs! I loved this one black plastic pair with orange on the inside. It has silver flame-like designs on the arms. Badass! But, not what I was looking for. I chose one of the more simple pairs, butof course it was the most expensive of my top 5! Because I liked the black pair so much, she talked to her manager and got approval for 50% off a second pair if I purchased it then. We quickly decided it would be money better spent if I chose sunglasses. I tried a bunch on, but only one pair had a shape that was made for my face. It is burgundy with pink on the inside (and Coach logos. Whatever… I could give a shit about brand names.) The most exciting thing is that she put me down for anti-reflective coating! No more squinting! Not more glowing blue glasses on camera!

Today I went to a local coffee shop for lunch and to work on my laptop. I got a call from the eye doctor (conveniently down the street) that my glasses were in. Unfortunately, my sunglasses are still being made. The wait time (and the inflated price of the frames) is the down side to getting glasses through a doctor. I stopped and got them on my way home from lunch.

The glasses tech was busy with a sales rep when I was there, so another lady brought my glasses out and adjusted the bridge to my nose. I felt super disoriented at first, but I think it is because these glasses are much wider that I’m used to so now my peripheral vision is corrected too. The other factors could be the anti-glare and the semi-rimless lenses. I’m already getting used to it.

Updates

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

Oh! Lots to update on… This calls for a list!

Anniversary
Cake Time! So, Monday was our 7-year anniversary. 7 years!! While Danny took off to de-stress, I had to go in to work for a doggy birthday party. Throwing parties is one of the more fun aspects of my job. I did, however, get approval to work only a half day that day, so I was out of there by 3 pm. I was excited to get home. I’m not sure why – I guess I had built up that day in my mind. What was I expecting, balloons and a parade in our honor? In the end, it was a fairly normal day, except that I got home much earlier than my normal 8 pm and I gave Danny a gift (a bamboo and glass lantern/candle holder that is stained to match our furniture.) We did go out to eat at P. F. Chang’s, which was a nice treat. It is always a 2+ hour wait to eat there on weekends, so we hadn’t been in a long time. The girly-girl in me was hoping for flowers, but they just die eventually anyway, right? And, I had all I needed for a perfect anniversary – my best friend/love of my life! (Insert “awwww’s” here!)

Hair
Ah, the never-ending re-braiding! As we have a quickie trip coming up in April that I’ll need to dress up for, I have been trying to wait until as close to that as possible before re-braiding my hair. UndoneIt gets fuzzy quickly. Especially since this year I only have 86 braids instead of my normal 100-120. I decided that because I have so “few” (hah) braids, my hair always looks ratty, the roots dread faster, and my forehead fivehead looks bigger. So I am re-partitioning the braids in hope of ending up with 100-ish. Step one: take out the braids and comb out the dreadlocks at the roots. I decided to do that in sections, the first being the lower half of my hair. I finished combing those all out last night. I ended up taking out 31 braids. I hope to start re-braiding those tonight, because having loose hair is bugging the crap out of me. I hate feeling hair blowing in my ears and face. I have it back in a ponytail with my remaining 55 braids. No one has mentioned anything. I’m sure it is stylish.

Dress
Seam RipperAs I wrote previously, we are going to a party in a California country club in April, and I posted that I needed a dress. At first I got excited about the idea of sewing my own. There was a big sale at the fabric store so I got fabric for 40% off and a pattern for 50% off. It was for a princess-seamed 50′s style dress in gray imitation silk shantung and a black Chinese brocade evening jacket. I had such high hopes! But, after much cursing and ironing and seam-ripping, it didn’t seem like the dress would turn out well enough to wear to the party. I am learning so much just doing the bodice and neckline (easestitch and gatherstitch and understitch, oh my!) so it is not a waste at all. It would all be easier with a dress form, I bet. I am definitely going to finish both pieces, but I needed a plan B plan A.

DressThis past weekend, we drove out to the outlet mall in hopes of finding a dresser and night stands for the guest room at Ikea. No luck. All we bought was a desk lamp for my office. So, to make the trip worth it, we went into the outlet mall. At the Banana Republic outlet, I found a really cute brown and cream dress for only $70. And, they had a size 0! I really have Mel to thank for me finding this. She took time out recently to send me lists of all sorts of dresses that would be appropriate and really cemented in my mind what I should look for. The dress is a tiny bit too big in the waist, so this week, I need to take it to the tailor I use at the mall and have it taken in (it’s just too hard for me to pin alterations on myself, plus I have no idea how to deal with the lining.)

I do have a question… I recently bought dressy summer sandals to break in before the trip. I like them because, while they aren’t super fancy, I could wear them both while walking around in jeans and going out to brunch in a skirt – which is perfect since we won’t be checking any luggage. But, are they nice enough to wear with my new dress to the party? The shoes are here and with the dress here. If not, I need to buy brown dress shoes, I guess. I also need to know what is appropriate as a cover-up. I get chilly at night, especially inside in air-conditioning. It seems like a wrap/shawl would be to dressy – am I right? I have a super comfy sweater that is a good color, but probably too casual. Plus, it has a bit of a bubble silhouette (gathered neck and waist) so it would be awkward to button over the dress. If you have suggestions, give me links, please! It needs to be something either easily packed in a little carry-on, or something (like the sweater) that I can wear on the plane with my travel clothes.

Dogs
Sleepy GirlChina recently had her sedated dental cleaning and tooth extraction. She got away with only one tooth removed – the one she had cracked as a puppy. She was in a sad state when she first got home. The anesthesia hit her hard (she *is* over 7-years-old!) and she was having trouble walking. The pain medicine made her drool a lot. By the next day she was more herself. We never did need to use the e-collar.

The dogs are getting along really well now. As some point at the beginning of the year, something clicked and I no longer had to worry about China lashing out at Benny when he annoyed her. I can now take them out to pee together! So far, I am the only one who does that regularly. Benny acts a fool for Danny. I don’t go on real walks with both of them because I worry about off-leash dogs in our neighborhood. It is illegal, but we have neighbors who do it anyway. There is a big German Shepherd Dog who likes to come bolting across the street full speed at me. Benny peed himself when he did it to the two of us. The dog ignores his owner and does it repeatedly. If he ever did it when I had China out, there would be bloodshed. She was attacked too many times by India that she would immediately and violently defend herself. We are responsible owners and always keep her clear of strange dogs she does not trust, but what can I do when the other dogs is illegally off leash? So, going on a walk with the both of them is out. It would just be way to hard to deal with any situation that came up, but I am so glad to be able to take them out to the grass for a “business trip” together. Benny loves, loves, loves his sister, and she wags her tail when he gets home from work with me and kisses her.

Computer
InstallingMy MacBook Pro is here! I’m ashamed to tell you I don’t know the specs for it. Danny got it for me. I have been installing lots of software – most of which we had to repurchase since it is an Intel Mac. Once I get my new external hard drive set up with my work files, I will start using it as my work computer. My current one is super old and not always so fast. I’ll just need to figure out a good set up for plugging the laptop in to a monitor, keyboard and mouse in my office.

Health
I’ve been feeling icky over the past week. My digestive system has been all screwy. It’s too vague to explain, but everything feels weird and uncomfortable, and my “schedules” are off. There is a part of my that keeps wanting to stop eating, because if I stopped eating, there wouldn’t be any food in me to make me uncomfortable, right? Hah. I vetoed that plan, and instead, I started upping my water intake yesterday and stopped eating dairy (a wise move for someone lactose-intolerant, eh?) I woke up feeling a little better for the first time all week, so I guess that is helping. I know that my system is thrown off due to stress, but I don’t have a magic switch to turn off that stress. I shall just continue with the water and no dairy for now, and I also stopped at the store to get some digestive aid tea and some Kashi crackers that have high fiber. I figure a little more fiber certainly couldn’t hurt!

On that note, I’m out! Back to work!

Country Club Casual

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008

It’s me again! I’m trying to do a brain dump today during lunch since I’ve had so little time. More to come, even!

So, in April we have a party to go to in California. It’s is Danny’s Grandma’s 80th birthday and the entire family is getting together for the first time in something like 10 years. We couldn’t exactly be the ones to ruin that, could we? Our trip will be super brief. We are flying there on a Saturday, the party is that night. We are staying one night in a hotel, then taking the red-eye home on Sunday.

The party is being held in a country club and starts at 6 pm. The invite says, “drinks, dinner and dancing.” The dress code is “country club casual”.

There is where I need help. “Country club casual?” Wha? Between asking Grandma and searching online, I gather it is on the dressier side of business causal (especially since it is an evening affair.) Danny already purchased his outfit – some great pants and a button-down shirt. But, I’m kind of at a loss. I do have a dress that I bought last year and wore to two different events – a wedding and a holiday party. But, since it is from Delia’s, a Juniors clothes store, it doesn’t have a very adult vibe. (See the dress here) When I wore it to the wedding, I wore fancy silver heels. To the holiday party, I wore knee-high black boots. Neither seem right for the occasion (one is way too dressy, the other too wintery for April in California.) So, if I wear the dress, I need to find shoes that would make it appropriate.

So, what do you think, dear readers? Is that dress too juvenile or dressy? If not, what kind of shoes would I need (I’d also need a sweater or wrap)? If that dress is not right, can you send some ideas my way? It needs to be a size 0 or 2, or easily altered while I still have time for a tailor. Links, please!

20080115 :: Day 15

20080115 :: Day 15, originally uploaded by punquin.

This is my little iPod Touch. I love it! If I just had wireless access everywhere I went, it would be perfect. But, I’m not going to switch from Verizon to ATT just for the iPhone. Anyway, Apple announced a software upgrade available for the Touch, and I got it all installed (after upgrading my iTunes for the iMillionth time.) Mail! Google Maps! And more… Very cool!

On the not-so-cool front, I’ve been having migraines. I’ve had them all my life, but normally only about 6 per year. I’ve had 6 in the past week. They are almost constant. If they were just pain, I’d probably ignore them, but I get “auras” as well. I found a webpage that described what I “see” before migraines so closely it was spooky. Get out of my brain!

Positive visual problems, the most common of which consists of an absent arc or band of vision with a shimmering or glittering zigzag border: This is often combined with photopsias (a sensation of lights, sparks, or colors due to electrical or mechanical stimulation of the ocular [eye] system) or visual hallucinations that may take various shapes. This is a highly characteristic syndrome that always occurs before the headache phase of an attack and is specific to a diagnosis of classic migraine. It is called a “fortification spectrum” because the jagged edges of the hallucinated arc resemble a fortified town with bastions around it.

Here is how mine start: My vision suddenly feels “off” and I have a little “spot” just off-center (like I stared at a bright light). The patch of vision that I can’t see in starts to grow, and a border appears (in an arc-shape) about 3/4 of the way around it. The border is in the colors you’d see in a puddle of oil in the street and is zig-zaggy little lines that almost look like crystals would under a microscope. The border flashes and sparkles and makes me dizzy. Gradually, the whole mess gets larger and larger as it fills my vision. Eventually, it is so big I can’t see the border anymore and my vision slowly refocuses, though it stays “off” (like I’m wearing someone else’s glasses) for up to a day.

Fun times, right? Well, 6 in a week or so is scary, so I am going to the eye doctor tonight. I am overdue for a check-up anyway. I am hoping that the migraines are being triggered by in incorrect prescription, but if not, my next stop will be the doctor. Wish me luck!

Unrelated, I’d like to learn Spanish (Latin America dialect). Being a visual learner, I’ve looked into Rosetta Stone. Has anyone used it? Is it worth the crazy amount of money?

I still have a headache from last night’s migraine attack. :(
