Back to the Grind

Monday, May 18th, 2009

Our trip to California went way too fast (though, at the same time, I was missing my doggies a whole lot while I was out there!) It is always so wonderful to spend time with Johnathan and Mel and to get to see family.

One highlight of the trip, was when we visited a doggy beach with their dog, Lucy, the sweetest pink-nosed pit in the world! It started out very foggy and grey, but before long, the sun was out and burning me straight through my spf 50! I was out in that sun longer than I should have been, but oh well. Lucy had a great time and it was very relaxing for us all.

Master Tony

Another highlight was getting to visit Venice Beach. I love it there, as I am a hippie at heart. For years, we’ve stopped by on every CA trip to see Master Tony (I stole this photo from Mel!). Tony teaches meditation and make beautiful power bead bracelets and necklaces. In the past, he had a table along the beach walk. But, this is the first time we’ve gotten to visit his new store, Jade! Last year, I got a necklace that he told us changes if you have good energy. He has always told me I have very good energy, but it was still a surprise to return and see just how different my necklace looked from the new ones in his store. My stone is a translucent peachy color and they start out opaque brown/tan. You are supposed to initially wear them for 30 days straight, which I did, but I continued on until the stone broke off the cord after 6 months. I was able to kind of repair it by cutting off extra cord from the back to tie the stone on with, but my main goal in CA was to have Tony restring it. I chose a really pretty cord for it, plus and extra one in case it breaks again. He kindly gave me the extra for free. You can see it here in the lame picture of me. I also got two bracelets: one for love/family and a jade one for luck. Danny got a really pretty Buddha necklace and a new protection bracelet. For Laura, we had Tony help choose a necklace that was good for happiness, love and positive energy.

All of Tony’s stuff is amazing, so stop by his store, Jade, if you are in Venice Beach! You can tell him the girl with the blond braids from the DC area sent you! :P

I miss Mel and Johnathan already. We had such a nice time with them. I want to steal them and bring them out here for a while…

Our California vacation was great! For now, I’ll leave you with these photos (since it took forever to get them up here!) But, we had a blast out west! Thanks again to Johnathan and Mel (and Lucy!) for letting up stay with them!!

Good Morning!

Good Morning!, originally uploaded by punquin.

We made it to California yesterday morning after a 5+ hour flight. We had brunch with Mel then relaxed until it was time for Danny and I to drive to Pacific Palisades for a dinner party with family. I was exhausted from not sleeping the night before the trip, but had a great time with everyone. I got to wear my super high heel sandals that make me 5’11″! I slept well, but woke up at 7 am est time at first. I made it to 6:45 am pst before getting up.

I’m all wrapped up in a blanket with some green tea Mel made for me. We need to start our showers and get ready for today’s adventures!

Leaving in the Morning!

Friday, May 1st, 2009

Early, early in the morning! Our flight to California is at 7 am. Ick. That is when I normally wake up.

If you want to follow my California adventures, read my blog and my twitter (I got twitpic working, so I can send photos to my twitter now from my phone.)

I just finished my last 5 (of 105) braids and crawled into bed. Hopefully I will wind down soon and be able to sleep. I’m not betting on it.

I keep feeling like I am forgetting to pack something!

My Brain Has Already Left…

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Is it vacation time yet? because I think my brain has already left… This morning I tried to wash my face with shampoo. And, seeing as it is peppermint tea tree shampoo, THAT got my attention!

I made it to 29 braids left to redo by the time I went to bed last night. I could ahve done more, but my nails keep getting these rips in the side halfway down my nail bed – too far down for me to be able to cut them for a couple weeks. I try my best to cut off the rips from the side and file the rest of the way in, but I’m filing into raw flesh and can’t get all of it. Leaves my nails lopsided and misshapen, but at least it stops the constant snagging on things (hair especially).

This morning I only got one braid redone before work because I got cause up in pulling out potential clothes for our trip. I never know what to pack. Can I just have a portal installed in my bag that opens up to my closet at home while I’m away? Oohh! Then I’d be able to bring the puppies! :P

I let myself get stressed out this morning looking at my work and thinking of all I have to do before Saturday. An optic migraine started instantly at the thought. Ugh! I talked through all my upcoming projects with my wonderful marketing manager coworker and I’m feeling a lot better about it all now. Still, my time will be short. 28 braids to redo, a standing commitment tonight to practice Rock Band 2 with 3 others, helping out at the front desk of work 5 -7 tomorrow… *breath and relax*

Work work work…

Friday? Friday!!

Friday, April 24th, 2009

I love my job (Art, technology and dogs. Perfect!), But I’m always glad for Friday! Even more exciting: our long-awaited vacation is just one week away! We are going out to California, though we have no plans yet.

As usual, I am redoing my braids for the trip. But, this time, I am 1.5 months later in doing so and the itch is driving me nuts! I didn’t want to redo them in March only to have to re-redo them in April, so I’ve suffered through the wait. Also, I’ve kept my hair strawberry blond with a bit of red mixed in since autumn, so I am switching back to my natural blond. I have 29/106 done so far and want to get to at least 70/106 by the end of the weekend.

Tonight we are heading to the mall (fun, fun) in hopes of finding me a sweater for the trip. All I want is a long-sleeve, button-down, brown (and maybe black) cardigan sweater for chilly nights on the beach. Is that too much to ask? Apparently it is, because everything I find is either not brown (brown matches most of my clothes, black would match the rest), not long-sleeved (why bother? sweaters are supposed to warm you!) or they are zip-up hoodies (too casual – I need something that can be dressed up too). Hopefully I’ll find something before we leave for California, but I’m not holding my breath that I’ll find something tonight. If you have any suggestions as to wear I should look, leave a comment or send me a twitter tweet thingie to @punquin.

Speaking of cardigans, I decided to do an upcycle/remake project. I took an old K-mart crew neck sweater from my donation pile and refashioned it into a cardigan. I think I will move the button slightly, but I’m too lazy to do it right now. I wore it yesterday, and it turned out really cute. The sweater had been way too short on me (like 7″ above my belly button!) and the neckline unflattering. Now it is really fun to wear.

It’s going to be really hot this weekend – around 90° F on Sunday. I don’t mind warm/hot weather, but our heater/air conditioner wasn’t working and I was worried about the dogs. Luckily it turned out to just be a power switch that was shorting out. The price they charged to replace it was kinda rediculous, but at least we are ready for the heat wave.

Sorry for the journal spam, but I have Internet for the first time in a week and I’ve been keeping a journal on my iPod.

We made it back to the US fine. No problems on our flight or in customs. Mel & Johnathan picked us up and got son food at the Lazy Dog after picking up Dan’s best man tux. I got a gardenburger and fries. Yey for a I’ll meal that doesn’t make me ill! And, I followed it with a soy chai latte that I’ve been dreaming of all week.

This morning I was up at 6 am yet again. I did some laundry and enjoyed some tea. Mel, Dan and I went to breakfast at 10 with Johnathan and his coworker. I ordered plain pancakes and received one gigantic one.

The three of us went on to Venice Beach. We go there every trip to visit a buddist who sells jewelry there. I got two new neckaces: a little jade Buddha and a really neat one that you have to wear 30 days taught at first for your energy. I can’t wear that one until after the wedding.

After Venice, Dan and I hit the road to get to Westlake Village. It took 2 hours to get there from Redondo Beach. We ran into family right in the lobby. After hellos, we checked in, showered and changed. At 5 we met out at the ceremony site for rehearsal. Dinner followed. It was really nice seeing everyone.

Tomorrow is a long day, starting with an early breakfast and the the wedding at 6. Dan has to be at his brother’s room at 2:45 to start the whole photos of getting ready stuff. I’ll be on my own to get ready and go down there, but it’s a 30 second walk from our room.

Night night!

Felt fine today, so I think that oog was because I tried some rice dish that must have had meat juice in it. my main problem today is that the toilet paper here is killing me! I knownit’s tmi, but it’s like wiping your butt with notebook paper.

Today was cold! Cloudy all day and a cold wind. Where is the desert weather I was promised? The pool was a ghost town most of the day. A few brave souls were out there bundled under towels and blankets.

We were supposed to go zip-lining early in the morning, but we decided against it. I bet it would have been really cold and windy up there. I woke up at 6 am regardless. My body never switches off eastern time. I read and studied Spanish when Danny dozed. For most of the day we just read and enjoyed the sound of the ocean. I braved the balcony for a while wrapped up in a blanket.

When I finished my book, I repacked my suitcase. I am super anal about packing. Everything gets put in bags in my bag because I can’t stand everything to get jumbled.

After dinner, we took a cab to Sammy Hagar’s Cabo Wabo. We got there at 7:30 and had to wait a while to get in to the main club. We got a table once they opened and settled in to wait for the live band. Two hours later, I was so ready to go, but Dan kept changing the time he said we’d wait till. The band came on at 10:30 and I wasn’t that excited and them. Maybe if I was drunk? Perhaps that is why they wait to go on… Thankfully, Danny was finally ready to go.

Now we are finally in bed bit I’m way too keyed up to sleep yet. Annoying, because I’m really tired. Danny has a bunch of drinks in him to help him sleep, so he’s already out.

We fly back to CA tomorrow afternoon.

Good morning. I was driven out of bed by the fact that it feels like a slab of marble with sheets on it.

I a bundled up in a blanket on our balcony listening to the waves in one ear and my iPod in the other. the sky is a million times clearer this morning. Figures. We leave today.

I miss my puppies and my bed, butbit’s on to California now. We’ll have another night with Johnathan and Mel before we check in to the hotel where Danny’s brother is getting married.

I am looking forward to being reconnected with the outside world again. Dan has had the Internet on his phone with his international plan. I’ve had to leave my phone off. The hotel has internet in one of the bars for $3/15 minutes, but it’s on their computer. I did get close enough to someone else’s wireless out by the pool one day, but it required a password, room number and $14.95. Dang!

So, I’ve been typing little diary entries into the notes program of my iPod touch. When I get back on the Internet, I should be able to email them to Live Journal. My journal will have to wait, as I can’t copy and paste on here.

Hopefully our flight and customs goes as smoothly as it did on our way in.

We made it to the airport. We had a note last night saying the shuttle we had paid for before the trip couldn’t take us (some taxi union thing). We didn’t have much cash and the front desk said a taxi would cost $70! Luckily, the taxis are all vans, and they pack them full of people and charge $15 per person. We didn’t have enough, but the taxi coordinator said there was an ATM there. So we made it.

Dan had 200 pesos ($20) left from the airport ATM once we were through security, so he gave it to me to buy a souvenir. I picked out a painted sea turtle figurine for my collection for 198 pesos and came back to show him. He was upset I hadn’t left change and the we’d now have something to declare. Um..? No big deal. He had just decided while I was in the shop that he needed something for his headache and I wasn’t phsycic enough to leave chan in pesos. I gave him my US cash so be could get a bloody Mary and chips ( his runner up to excedrine).

There is wireless here, but like all airports, I can’t get my iPod to go anywhere on it.
