Happy Birthday to Me!

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

Today was my birthday. Thank you to everyone who sent me good wishes – you made my day special!

I worked as usual today, though from home due to office construction. Danny let me pick where to eat dinner tonight, and I chose Cheesecake Factory. I got a smoothie and a delicious grilled cheese. I got cake to-go that is down in the fridge right now.

I got 3 birthday cards that made me smile. One from my grandparents(-in-law), from my aunt and from Danny’s brother and his wife. My daddy called me in the evening and my brother sent birthday wishes via IM. I got a present -Danny’s grandparents sent me a check. They are so kind!

I am pooped and am going to read in bed for a while. I am re-reading The Crimson Petal and the White by Michael Faber.

Thank you all again!

Happy July!

Monday, July 6th, 2009

Time is going both super fast and super slow. How is it already July 6th? I didn’t do anything exciting this weekend. Danny went to a party our friends held a couple hours away. It is easier for him to spend the night out there. As I am not a partier and don’t even drink, I hung out at home with the puppies. We went up to be as soon as the fireworks started so I could keep Benny calm.

China currently has a UTI. She has had one before, poor girl. It is a struggle to get her to take her pills. I had to use cottage cheese when I gave them to her. Last night it was Danny’s turn and Benny ended up eating her pills! Ugh! They aren’t cheap – $60 for 15 of them. He managed to get her to take most of a dose eventually. Looks like it is back to cottage cheese tonight.

My birthday is just 8 days away! If you want to send me a birthday card (or presents! :P ) you can send it here: 43300-116 Southern Walk Plaza #234, Broadlands, VA 20148-4463. I don’t know if we’ll end up doing  party or anything this year. I was thinking of doing a cookout, but I’m not sure. My birthday is on a Tuesday and I have a work even the weekend following it, so we’d either have to do it this weekend coming up, or the end of the month. I’m not sure.

I am currently working from home 24-7. The are doing construction at work and it will involve my office door moving walls. I am a little bummed that I will lose the natural light I used to get through my door, but oh well. Im just glad I’ll still have an office to go to! I am going to be rather lonely and stir-crazy after all this time at home.

How are you guys doing? I just figured ut how to get my LiveJournal friend list in my feed reader so I can catch up. However, I still won’t see our entries if it is protected. I just haven’t have time to read a million websites a day!

I’m Alive… Mostly…

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

I’d been feeling kinda under the weather, and this morning while getting packed up for work I started feeling worse. Luckily, the company I work for is very awesome and understanding, so I was able to stay home. I’ll probably just work from home for the rest of the week so I get plenty of rest.

I can’t believe it is already summer and almost July! I haven’t even thought about whether I’d throw myself a birthday party next month like I did last year. I’m not sure I have it in me (I certainly don’t today!). You can just shower me with gifts instead! ‘Cause I know you’re all rolling in money right now!

That’s all I’ve got right now. I’m already ready for bed and hoping the tv will be able to entertan me for a while.

My Birthday Party!

My Birthday Party!, originally uploaded by punquin.

Yey! The party was fun! There was a good turn-out. I was happily surprised to see a lot of my coworkers, in addition to Dawn & Tony making it after just arriving home from the beach.

The only thing that went wrong was that our Xbox officially took it’s last breath and went into permanent RRoD. So, no Rock Band. Dan got a 2 year warranty from Best Buy when he got the Xbox (the receipt says 8/26/06). It looks like you have to go online and request a cardboard coffin for it. I’m not sure what that means for our content on the HD. They warranty says it doesn’t cover lost data. Hrm. Danny apparently does not care to play Rock Band anymore, so I don’t think he really is motivated to get it fixed. I love singing on the game and just bought a year of Xbox Live which is now useless. :/

Back to the party! So, there wasn’t any Rock Band, which left the boys to mostly hang out and watch Danny’s Lamb of God dvd. Us girls dominated the craft table. I had set up 8 paint-your-own bobble-head dogs and 6 color-your-own fuzzy velvet jewelry boxes. We ran out of everything!

The photo booth was a hit, and it didn’t fall down, so I was happy. I hung paper clips on the outside of the booth so everyone could display their pictures in a “gallery”. We ended up filling all of the paper clips before the last guest left.

A lot of the girls were wearing dresses so they couldn’t play Twister, but we did have one good round (that I won!) I had to excuse myself from the party for a little while around midnight when I got a bad stomach ache. But, it got a lot better so that I was able to go downstairs to clean up and say goodbye to the last of the guests.

I was so, so happy that Mel was able to fly out for the party! She was a huge help setting up and decorating the rainbow cupcakes. She was with us until Sunday night. I miss her already! I wish Johnathan had been able to come too.

Party Prep!

First Print from my Photo Booth!, originally uploaded by punquin.

Now that the charity event is behind me, it’s time for birthday party prep! I normally go in to the office Mon/Wed/Fri and work pretty late, but since my birthday was Monday and I have so much to do at home, I am going in Tues/Thurs this week.

I got started on one of my big pre-party projects – my photo booth! Using a tv tray, cardboard and lots of foam core board, I constructed a booth in our front room. Inside, you sit facing my laptop, where the built-in iSight cam links into the photo booth software, “Mugshot Machine”. It is hooked up to my mini photo printer, so when you push “Print”, your photo comes out through a slot in the back of the “booth”. I lucked out that the foam core board that was on sale matched my blue walls. I need to go get some wrapping paper tonight to cover the outside with. My test of painting it didn’t work well over all the packing tape. I have a sheer black curtain saved from a million years ago that I can hang on the door.

I have a lot of cleaning and laundry to get done before Saturday. I always use parties as motivation to clean our house from top to bottom. Well, not Danny’s desk. He gets mad if I clean that. I’ve started on the laundry. I need to wash all the sheets and towels, just in case anyone stays the night.

I still need to go to Costco and get a folding table – running out of time to do that. I need to make a grocery list as well. I plan on having snacks and baking vegan cupcakes. I need to decide if I should purchase a few more tracks on Rock Band before the party. I’m not sure how many people will be playing it, though. Is it worth it?

The folding table is going to be for my craft table. I know, I am silly for wanting a craft table at my party, but I am excited. I am hoping people actually get crafty! I was trying to think up a way to have all the craft supplies on-hand but not taking up the whole table. I turned around while thinking and was looking at our ironing board. I think that would work if I put it against the wall and covered it with a table cloth (need to get another from the dollar store, then). That could hold all the paint-your-own bobble-head dogs, coloring jewelry boxes and extra paints.

Blah blah blah. I’m sure none of this is interesting to you all… But, I needed to think “out loud”. So… who’s coming to the party?!

Happy Birthday to Me!

Warm, originally uploaded by punquin.

Yey, birthday! Boo, Monday. Working a half day, so I’m about to wrap things up. Benny and I went to Starbucks to enjoy a working breakfast outside. We scored a table with a shady umbrella, but it’s still super bright out here. This week I need to do prep for my birthday party on Saturday. I need to get a folding table, food/ baking supplies. and build my “photo booth”.

Earrings!

Earrings, originally uploaded by punquin.

I got a birthday present yesterday! A beautiful pair of silver earrings arrived from my Amazon wishlist courtesy of my wonderful bro & sis in-law in California! Thank you, thank you!! I’ve been trying to find some Celtic French hook earrings in silver for a while now in stores and was about to give up and order online.

It’s Friday!! Last night I got about 80 d0g biscuits baked for the charity d0g wash and bake sale on Sunday. Ran out of time to do more. Today I wanted to update my iPod before going to work, but the software wasn’t available yet. Luckily, I have plenty to do to distract myself until I get home.

The Car Saga…

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

My birthday is in 5 days! Where has time gone?? Here is my shameless link to my wishlist at Amazon.com. :D

I have a big charity event at work on Sunday, so this week involves a lot of prep for that on top of my normal tasks. I have a lot of baking to do for the bake sale portion of the event. Because the event is the day before my birthday, I’m having my birthday party the following weekend. At least I’m nearly ready for that. I knew in advance my time would be short, so I’ve been gathering my supplies. I just need to get a folding table and the party food (and cupcake ingredients).

Humidity and allergies are wearing me down. I feel tired regardless of how much sleep I get. Suck. Even Benny seems tired! I haven’t played Rock Band in forever because of that (and the fact that Danny is sudden;y anti-Rock Band). I’ve lost the lung capacity I had built up from practicing singing so much. On of these days I’ll feel more like myself.

I never wrote about our adventures getting me a new car…

We went into searching not really knowing what kind of car I’d end up with, but having very specific requirements in mind. The Nissan Murano ended up filling those nicely. The salesman who was helping us when we first looked at one was young and friendly – it was his second day on the job. We were happy with the features of the car, but Danny didn’t want to start talking deals until we had compared the car to a Honda he had in mind. We promised to come back and headed to Honda to check it out. We quickly saw things that were deal-breakers with that car, so we called the salesman to let him know we’d be back soon and we stopped off at home to get everything that went with my Outback so we’d be ready to trade it in (They had agreed to match Car Max’s great appraisal.)

So, we get back to the dealership and start talking price. The Murano we were looking at was a little high in price. The salesman had already gotten the lowest price he could from his sales manager, so he looked at his computer to see what other used Muranos he had on-hand. There was one that was cheaper that had an added feature (DVD in the back) but slightly more mileage. We asked to take that one for a quick test drive since the price was more realistic.

When we were backing that car out of it’s spot, the car locked up. The key fob was broken, so the security kicked in and stopped the car. We had to get out of the car with it halfway of of it’s spot which caused the sales manager to come hurrying out to yell at our salesman. He then turned to Danny and I and said, “Go inside and wait. I need to talk to you about this.” His tone of voice was, ‘You just earned yourself detention! Go to the principal’s office right now!’

I felt shaken by his attitude towards us (even the sales guy looked shocked) and Danny was pissed. When the sales manager came in, he started calmly, but maliciously tearing into us for daring to look at another Murano (on his lot – wtf??) when he had already given us a price on the first one we saw. Danny talked money with him, explaining that the first one was too expensive and the second was a better value for the money. The ass manager made it clear that he felt the two Muranos were as different as night and day and we could only like one or the other. Even *I* piped up and tried to explain that there was very little difference between the two cars to us and that we wanted to make the right decision. That just made the manager more belligerent. Danny told him he was making us feel uncomfortable. He said he didn’t intend to do that, but his eyes said ‘Fuck you.’ The salesman looked like he wanted the earth to swallow him up so he could disappear. I was feeling so hurt by then that I just stared at my hands and tried not to cry. I was relieved when Danny told him he had lost a sale and that we were leaving. I only made it out the door before I started crying. I think the family standing outside were a little confused as to why someone would leave a car dealership crying.

I felt completely shat on by that point. He made me feel like I didn’t deserve a car unless his highness the sales manager granted me the privilege. We decided to go to a Starbucks so we could get on the internet and look for other used Muranos in the area. We found one in the color I had liked (from the first one we saw) and the extra features of the second car we saw. It had a little more mileage but a great sale price. We didn’t get there until 30 minutes till they closed, but we test drove the car and were happy with it. They couldn’t go lower on the price, as it was already listed a couple thousand lower than normal as an internet special, but they agreed to match the Car Max price of my trade in (they appraised it $1,000 less before seeing the Car Max price). Everyone was super nice there (though they were clueless about the fact that the car was satellite radio ready but it wasn’t installed) and we kept quite a few employees there until 11 pm buying the car.

The car is a 2005, so it can’t do fancy things like play mp3 cds and it’s navigation maps are really out of date. But, Danny plans to buy the newest map disk when it comes out this fall and get satellite installed (I am having serious XM withdrawls!) It is matching the mileage my Outback was getting, which is what I hoped. It’s a little annoying to have to adjust the seat and mirrors all the time since Danny likes to drive it too. Once we get a second key fob, that shouldn’t be a problem. It will take a few weeks before I really feel at home in it. I have a hard time switching cars. Benny seems really comfortable in the back seat and even has his own a/c vents now.

Well, that is my car buying saga. I highly recommend Oscar at Brown’s Fairfax Nissan. I would suggest you avoid Brown’s Sterling Nissan, unless you’d like the sales manager to treat you like a smelly dog turd.
