Catching Up

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

I need to catch up here!

As you’ve read, we traded my car in for a 2007 Santa Fe. It had the most basic of basic stereos, so we went last week to Charlottesville to have Crutchfield install and navigation/stereo combo. We were happy to get to see friends who moved out there as well. Initially, Crutchfield called us to say they didn’t have the unit they were supposed to reserve for us, but we ended up with a lower model (at a discount) that suited us better. We also installed a back-up camera which makes me feel a lot safer. I was having a hard time seeing out the back when I reversed. In the end, they weren’t able to finish the install – the unit is in place and works, but they didn’t have what they needed to get my steering wheel controls hooked in. Right now I have to lean a lot to change stations and fix the volume. We’ll have to go back again to get the rest done when they get the parts in.

On Tuesday night I finally got to see Nine Inch Nails!! I’d been wanting to see them forever. Back on our wedding anniversary, Danny bought really great tickets. I didn’t realize until we got there that we’d been in the first row of seats! The show was so, so great! I enjoyed all three bands: Street Sweeper Social Club (with RAtM’s guitarist), NIN, and Jane’s Addiction. I’m not a huge JA fan, but the singer was just so happy to be there entertaining us that it couldn’t help but rub of on us. And, Dave Navarro is so good and playing the aloof, douchey guitar-guy that it was a lot of fun to watch. I took photos on my cell phone, which would have been fine, but I kept turning on the keyboard lock while it was saving them. Apparently, this makes the photos save at a much lower size and quality. Bummer.

2007 Santa Fe Limited in dark blue

We had a busy weekend! We’ve been going over our budget lately and Dan has been doing a great job lowering all of our costs and payments. Since the Murano we got for me last year turned out to not be the best fit (purely because of the age), we started looking into trading in for something less expensive.

I’ll spare you all the drawn-out details, but a lot of thought and reseach went in to our decision to get a 2007 or newer Hyundai Santa Fe Limited. While we did have a dealer run the numbers on a lease of a brand new one, ultimately we had to go with a used one. The price was great – lower payments than my ’05 Murano and less miles on it.

I did have to compromise a lot… I gave up keyless ignition, a sunroof, backup camera and navigation. I had no choice in the color, though it is fine. Just not what I’d choose. While the Santa Fe plays MP3 CDs, it only has a single tray. The Murano had a 6-cd changer. When we saw that (and the fact that it isn’t the best sound quality), Dan said we’d swap it out for a in-dash double-din nav/stereo. He’s unsure now… It could cost a lot after install is added in. We’ll see.

If you can believe it, I haven’t driven it yet! I hate driving, and it takes me a couple weeks to be comfortable in any car I’m unfamiliar with. So Dan does the test drive, and I just try out the driver’s seat – making sure I can adjust everything to my liking and checking out any blind spots. Once I’ve driven it for a while, I’ll be fine. Hopefully, the rain will let up and I can take it around the neighborhood for my first drive. For now, I am working from home.

The Car Saga…

My birthday is in 5 days! Where has time gone?? Here is my shameless link to my wishlist at Amazon.com. :D

I have a big charity event at work on Sunday, so this week involves a lot of prep for that on top of my normal tasks. I have a lot of baking to do for the bake sale portion of the event. Because the event is the day before my birthday, I’m having my birthday party the following weekend. At least I’m nearly ready for that. I knew in advance my time would be short, so I’ve been gathering my supplies. I just need to get a folding table and the party food (and cupcake ingredients).

Humidity and allergies are wearing me down. I feel tired regardless of how much sleep I get. Suck. Even Benny seems tired! I haven’t played Rock Band in forever because of that (and the fact that Danny is sudden;y anti-Rock Band). I’ve lost the lung capacity I had built up from practicing singing so much. On of these days I’ll feel more like myself.

I never wrote about our adventures getting me a new car…

We went into searching not really knowing what kind of car I’d end up with, but having very specific requirements in mind. The Nissan Murano ended up filling those nicely. The salesman who was helping us when we first looked at one was young and friendly – it was his second day on the job. We were happy with the features of the car, but Danny didn’t want to start talking deals until we had compared the car to a Honda he had in mind. We promised to come back and headed to Honda to check it out. We quickly saw things that were deal-breakers with that car, so we called the salesman to let him know we’d be back soon and we stopped off at home to get everything that went with my Outback so we’d be ready to trade it in (They had agreed to match Car Max’s great appraisal.)

So, we get back to the dealership and start talking price. The Murano we were looking at was a little high in price. The salesman had already gotten the lowest price he could from his sales manager, so he looked at his computer to see what other used Muranos he had on-hand. There was one that was cheaper that had an added feature (DVD in the back) but slightly more mileage. We asked to take that one for a quick test drive since the price was more realistic.

When we were backing that car out of it’s spot, the car locked up. The key fob was broken, so the security kicked in and stopped the car. We had to get out of the car with it halfway of of it’s spot which caused the sales manager to come hurrying out to yell at our salesman. He then turned to Danny and I and said, “Go inside and wait. I need to talk to you about this.” His tone of voice was, ‘You just earned yourself detention! Go to the principal’s office right now!’

I felt shaken by his attitude towards us (even the sales guy looked shocked) and Danny was pissed. When the sales manager came in, he started calmly, but maliciously tearing into us for daring to look at another Murano (on his lot – wtf??) when he had already given us a price on the first one we saw. Danny talked money with him, explaining that the first one was too expensive and the second was a better value for the money. The ass manager made it clear that he felt the two Muranos were as different as night and day and we could only like one or the other. Even *I* piped up and tried to explain that there was very little difference between the two cars to us and that we wanted to make the right decision. That just made the manager more belligerent. Danny told him he was making us feel uncomfortable. He said he didn’t intend to do that, but his eyes said ‘Fuck you.’ The salesman looked like he wanted the earth to swallow him up so he could disappear. I was feeling so hurt by then that I just stared at my hands and tried not to cry. I was relieved when Danny told him he had lost a sale and that we were leaving. I only made it out the door before I started crying. I think the family standing outside were a little confused as to why someone would leave a car dealership crying.

I felt completely shat on by that point. He made me feel like I didn’t deserve a car unless his highness the sales manager granted me the privilege. We decided to go to a Starbucks so we could get on the internet and look for other used Muranos in the area. We found one in the color I had liked (from the first one we saw) and the extra features of the second car we saw. It had a little more mileage but a great sale price. We didn’t get there until 30 minutes till they closed, but we test drove the car and were happy with it. They couldn’t go lower on the price, as it was already listed a couple thousand lower than normal as an internet special, but they agreed to match the Car Max price of my trade in (they appraised it $1,000 less before seeing the Car Max price). Everyone was super nice there (though they were clueless about the fact that the car was satellite radio ready but it wasn’t installed) and we kept quite a few employees there until 11 pm buying the car.

The car is a 2005, so it can’t do fancy things like play mp3 cds and it’s navigation maps are really out of date. But, Danny plans to buy the newest map disk when it comes out this fall and get satellite installed (I am having serious XM withdrawls!) It is matching the mileage my Outback was getting, which is what I hoped. It’s a little annoying to have to adjust the seat and mirrors all the time since Danny likes to drive it too. Once we get a second key fob, that shouldn’t be a problem. It will take a few weeks before I really feel at home in it. I have a hard time switching cars. Benny seems really comfortable in the back seat and even has his own a/c vents now.

Well, that is my car buying saga. I highly recommend Oscar at Brown’s Fairfax Nissan. I would suggest you avoid Brown’s Sterling Nissan, unless you’d like the sales manager to treat you like a smelly dog turd.

Waiting

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

Car: On, Friday morning, I went out to my car only to find it wouldn’t start. Well, in my words, it only was starting “halfway”, in Carmax’s words, there was something about “turning-over” (makes me think of a submissive dog.) They gave me a number to a tow company, who charged me $160 to tow it 10 miles to Carmax. Ow, but I guess my maintenance plan will pay back $50 of that. I got a call in the afternoon from the service department. They had confirmed the problem I had, and since the “check engine” light on my car didn’t supply any error codes, they called a contact at Suburu. Apparently, this is something that happens (scary) and they recommended the service guys do some thing with the gas petal pressed/pumped for awhile and it would start. They said that worked and that it was started every time for them after that. Part of me was relieved it wasn’t something major, but I was also really worried that it would happen to me again – possibly when I’m all alone. The service manager asked if they could keep the car till Monday (they are closed on weekends) so they could test that it started still. While inconvenient, that sounded like a smart idea. So, I am working from home today. Dan is as well, so he can take me to get my car before going out drinking with friends for “happy hour”.

Benny’s Birthday: So, Benny’s birthday is Friday the 14th. I will be hosting a birthday party for him at my work. The problem is, with the dog parties I usually host, I am the director/photographer and I have an employee assist me by being the one to cut the cake and interact with the “guests” in the photos. But, this time *I* want to be in the pictures. It’s his first birthday, and I want to go all out. Danny will be out of the country, so he can’t come. I guess asking my photographer friends if they are available to come might be useless as well, as that party will be at 1 pm on a work day (“nap time” at my work so the room is available.) I’m not sure what to do.

Bah.

Well today isn’t going my way.

Last night, right before bed, I started to have a sore throat. It worried me, because someone at work has a bad cold, and my colds always start with sore throats. Sure enough, it got steadily worse throughout the night and I barely slept.

This morning I go out to my car to run to the drugstore for stuff to hopefully shorten my cold, and my car wouldn’t start! Well, it turns on half-way but won’t “turn over”. All the bad dash lights are on. I think we jinxed it the other day when Danny and I were talking about how few problems I’d had with the car.

Luckily, Dan had bought a repair agreement with Car Max, so I am currently waiting for a tow truck. They said if I get my car there by noon, they should be able to look at it today. They aren’t open on the weekend.

Can I whine for a moment? My throat hurts so much! I don’t want to be sick!!
