Baby Shower

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

I can’t believe I’ve made it far enough to have just had my baby shower! This pregnancy has certainly not flown by. But, the time for baby’s arrival is getting closer and closer regardless!

The second weekend of the month, our dear friends Johnathan and Mel flew all the way out from California for our baby shower. Mel and my good friend Laura were the organizers. (I will admit that I picked the party’s theme and a few other things…) It was important to me that we had a co-ed shower that was more of a party. More than half of my friends are guys, and I really wanted Danny by my side.

The party was great! Mel and Laura outdid themselves, and I hope I get to repay the favor some day. Danny and I arrived at our neighborhood’s community center to find it perfectly decorated in my aqua and orange rock n’ roll theme. There was an amazing spread of food, thanks to Laura and our friend Rebecca, super tasty cupcakes from Georgetown Cupcakes, and a craft table for decorating baby onesies. (My craft tables at the parties I host are rather notorious, so it was fitting that they have one for me!)

We kept the games to a minimum, but they were a lot of fun! The first was to see who could drink beer from a baby bottle the fastest. Hah! Obviously, I didn’t not partake. The other game was that everyone cut a length of ribbon to what they though my baby bump size was. My adorable little niece Cassie got it dead on and was the winner!

I was really sleepy by the time we were to open presents. Cassie helped Danny and I open them. We got so many adorable clothes and baby books, as well as some practical items. (Slide Show)

The best part of the weekend was having our friends stay with us. I miss them so much now that they are gone!

After the shower, we had to take stock of what we need before baby arrives. While we got great stuff, there was a lot of important things missing. We pooled Christmas money and a few returns of duplicates and ordered some of the bigger items off of our registries. We are registered at Target, Amazon and Babies R Us if you want to get something for the little one in lieu of a Christmas gift for me. Babies need so much stuff!

Laura’s Party

On Saturday, we hosted Laura’s birthday party at our house – our birthday gift to her. Laura chose money as her theme, and it turned out really fun!

We had a playlist of money songs for the start of the party, lots of green/gold/silver decorations featuring $’s, jewels and play money and a craft room with paint-your-own piggy banks and coin purses. I “blinged” out the photobooth I’d left up from my last two parties. I was planning to break it down anyway, so I figured I’d go all out and make it bright, shiny gold.

The only downer during the party was when China gave a guest a scratch on his nose. It wasn’t her intention to hurt him, and he was very understanding. I felt horrible about it, though. Rest assured I will make sure noone is inches from her face at future parties. Something to keep in mind around any dog – teeth and claws are sharp, regardless of good intentions.

Everyone had fun playing or watching others play Rock Band. I warmed up the mic, and it didn’t take long for vocals to be the most popular instrument. We had the game on “no fail” mode. No one has fun if you fail out of a song… Playing Rock Band at a party is about having fun and including beginners. It was too bad that people didn’t hear more of the great playlist we’d worked hard on. Maybe next party we can figure out a way to have the music in the craft room even after Rock Band is turned on.

The party went quite late, and as I didn’t have to fill in on the mic, I spent the last half hour closing up pots of paint, taking down streamers and consolidating the leftover food. I was (understandably) the first one up in the morning (I don’t drink) so I spent my time cleaning. I got the kitchen cleaned, Laura’s party gear and leftovers packed for her, the photobooth broken down and stored, the craft table put away and the floor swept/mopped.

When Danny, Ivan and Laura made it out of bed, we cooked brunch and caught the first few episodes of Better Off Ted.

Brainstorm for me!

Friday, April 10th, 2009

I need to design a logo that will print out on our party photobooth images next week, but I need help thinking up what to write! The party will have a money theme, and it is for Laura’s birthday. Guests will be dressing either very rich or very poor. Decorations are green, gold and silver with lots of money, dollar signs, gold chains/beads and diamonds. The photo booth will be shiny gold with metallic green dollar signs (photos coming soon!).

I have about 1″ h x 4″ w to work with. It should mention that it is Laura’s birthday, but beyond that we just want something clever and money/bling/riches-related. If I have room, I’ll add some graphics, otherwise I can bling out the words. We want something catchy or funny that fits with the theme.

Any ideas? Here are some old logos to give you an idea of the space available… (They are slightly cut off in these scans.)2688950433_62e4c4ba513009997267_a03f2b92c1

Monday on a Tuesday

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

Today is Monday on a Tuesday for me. I had 7 days straight of work or work events, so I took Monday off. Laura stayed over after our work event and we went hunting for supplies forthe birthday party I am hosting for her in April. We made good progress! We just need a few more goodies and the craft supplies, then we’ll be ready.

Don’t really have anything exciting to talk about since I’ve been so busy with work. We need to grocery shop so I am trying to plan out meals and food lists. Does anyone have suggestions on good vegan or low-dairy veggie meals that are inexpensive and quick/easy to make? Bonus points if a meat item can also be prepared to go with it so Dan doesn’t have to eat veggie with me.

Busy Busy Busy!

Party Room, originally uploaded by punquin.

I’ve been super busy. We have our Halloween/Rock Band party coming up on Saturday and I am really OCD about party planning. But, when I chose the date, I didn’t realize it would be the same weekend as a big annual conference for work. Oops. That meant I’ve had to do as much cleaning/shopping/decorating as possible over the past two weeks. But, add to that the 9-10+ hour work days that are to be expected when we are about to throw a big conference. Oy.

I’ve been working on setting up the craft room all week, and it’s almost done. I have samples of the projects done, but I still need to make little signs. I still have the photo booth I made for my birthday party. I can’t set that completely up until the day of the party because it used my laptop.

Today was the first chance I got to work from home all week, so as soon as I stopped working for the night, I started chores. I inhaled vegan mac & cheeze while standing at the counter, wrapped all my fancy candy pretzels, vacuumed all three floors (plus stairs), bathed both dogs, gathered all the trash, and did 3.5 loads of laundry. Sore.

Tomorrow afternoon I will head to the hotel in Fairfax where the conference will be held. I’ll be staying there – the first time I’ve stayed in a hotel room alone. I head home Saturday morning at some point. Unfortunately, because I am staying both nights, I have to miss the awards ceremony Saturday afternoon to get home and do the final setup.

My first task when I get home will be to bake cupcakes. Dan has agreed to take on the rice crispy treats, guacamole, and sour cream dip (vegan for me). I’m recycling my mermaid costume, so I’ve spent no time on that beyond making sure I have all the parts ready. I know I’m going to be racing around like crazy come Saturday, but I’m sure the party will be fun!

My Birthday Party!

My Birthday Party!, originally uploaded by punquin.

Yey! The party was fun! There was a good turn-out. I was happily surprised to see a lot of my coworkers, in addition to Dawn & Tony making it after just arriving home from the beach.

The only thing that went wrong was that our Xbox officially took it’s last breath and went into permanent RRoD. So, no Rock Band. Dan got a 2 year warranty from Best Buy when he got the Xbox (the receipt says 8/26/06). It looks like you have to go online and request a cardboard coffin for it. I’m not sure what that means for our content on the HD. They warranty says it doesn’t cover lost data. Hrm. Danny apparently does not care to play Rock Band anymore, so I don’t think he really is motivated to get it fixed. I love singing on the game and just bought a year of Xbox Live which is now useless. :/

Back to the party! So, there wasn’t any Rock Band, which left the boys to mostly hang out and watch Danny’s Lamb of God dvd. Us girls dominated the craft table. I had set up 8 paint-your-own bobble-head dogs and 6 color-your-own fuzzy velvet jewelry boxes. We ran out of everything!

The photo booth was a hit, and it didn’t fall down, so I was happy. I hung paper clips on the outside of the booth so everyone could display their pictures in a “gallery”. We ended up filling all of the paper clips before the last guest left.

A lot of the girls were wearing dresses so they couldn’t play Twister, but we did have one good round (that I won!) I had to excuse myself from the party for a little while around midnight when I got a bad stomach ache. But, it got a lot better so that I was able to go downstairs to clean up and say goodbye to the last of the guests.

I was so, so happy that Mel was able to fly out for the party! She was a huge help setting up and decorating the rainbow cupcakes. She was with us until Sunday night. I miss her already! I wish Johnathan had been able to come too.

Party Prep!

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

First Print from my Photo Booth!, originally uploaded by punquin.

Now that the charity event is behind me, it’s time for birthday party prep! I normally go in to the office Mon/Wed/Fri and work pretty late, but since my birthday was Monday and I have so much to do at home, I am going in Tues/Thurs this week.

I got started on one of my big pre-party projects – my photo booth! Using a tv tray, cardboard and lots of foam core board, I constructed a booth in our front room. Inside, you sit facing my laptop, where the built-in iSight cam links into the photo booth software, “Mugshot Machine”. It is hooked up to my mini photo printer, so when you push “Print”, your photo comes out through a slot in the back of the “booth”. I lucked out that the foam core board that was on sale matched my blue walls. I need to go get some wrapping paper tonight to cover the outside with. My test of painting it didn’t work well over all the packing tape. I have a sheer black curtain saved from a million years ago that I can hang on the door.

I have a lot of cleaning and laundry to get done before Saturday. I always use parties as motivation to clean our house from top to bottom. Well, not Danny’s desk. He gets mad if I clean that. I’ve started on the laundry. I need to wash all the sheets and towels, just in case anyone stays the night.

I still need to go to Costco and get a folding table – running out of time to do that. I need to make a grocery list as well. I plan on having snacks and baking vegan cupcakes. I need to decide if I should purchase a few more tracks on Rock Band before the party. I’m not sure how many people will be playing it, though. Is it worth it?

The folding table is going to be for my craft table. I know, I am silly for wanting a craft table at my party, but I am excited. I am hoping people actually get crafty! I was trying to think up a way to have all the craft supplies on-hand but not taking up the whole table. I turned around while thinking and was looking at our ironing board. I think that would work if I put it against the wall and covered it with a table cloth (need to get another from the dollar store, then). That could hold all the paint-your-own bobble-head dogs, coloring jewelry boxes and extra paints.

Blah blah blah. I’m sure none of this is interesting to you all… But, I needed to think “out loud”. So… who’s coming to the party?!

Coloring Table Cloth

Coloring Table Cloth, originally uploaded by punquin.

I just made my birthday party coloring table cloth for the craft table. I ended up getting a roll of thick, white wrapping paper. I stuck coloring sheets I’d printed on sticker paper on the back side of the wrapping paper roll (the front of the paper was too slippery for markers). Once it’s unrolled itself for a while, I’ll trim it up. Then, I’ll just need to get a plastic table cloth to go under it. It came out cute, and I ever traced a photo of Benny and I for one corner.

One of my two craft projects has arrived, and it is really cute! And, tomorrow, my vegan cupcake recipe book will arrive from Amazon and I’ll pick out my two cupcake and frosting recipes. I already know how I want to decorate one set.

Time to go read in bed, I think. I’m exhausted. One day I’ll catch up on sleep. Barely sleeping during our trip put me really behind in the rest department.
